The story….

The artwork is woven with the sacred eye design, designed to mimic the base of a basket. This piece is intended to evoke a spiritual presence of creation always watching over us on our journeys as humans, gathered by Earth, Air, Water in our bodies & Fire in our hearts. Each one of us is a basket containing the precious gift life & breath with an array of diverse stories that comprise who we are. The artwork is a spiritual invocation to listening to intuition, following curiosities and remembering our common roots as human beings.

The process….

The idea was contemplated for two years before being sketched out on paper. The artist rarely sketches work however the math for this piece with it’s design precision required this. After the hand spun local churro wool was purchased, it was spun into a skein on an umbrella for ease to spin onto spools. The 24 black & white panels were woven in the lightning design, cut and stitched as to not ravel. The hemp yarn was created and the loom was dressed to create the negative space in the center of the cotton warp. Measured to match, the works were cut & stitched. The churro panels were placed and hand stitched down on the hemp. Hemp panels were finalized by stitching together.
