The story….

Often struggling with names for artworks, the artist chose to embrace the space where we can’t put a word to something, the word that eludes our tongues; Untitled. It reflects the nameless, the free form, the in between. Wanting to create something that felt like the in- between, the artist utilized a roll of plastic filament held in studio for the last 14 years for a curious reason. The idea of plastic in textiles in timeless art is grotesque to the artist so she wanted to incorporate in a way that didn’t waste the trash she had recycled from someone else to share a story of beauty. Untitled draws the eyes to the negative space, to the wall exposed in fragments of the textile while permitting an ethereal presentation.

The process….

The floor loom was dressed with white cotton warps. The artist used a spool of Haitian cotton with subtle flecks of seed in it for an unusual base weft design along with alpaca, jute and merino silk. The top element of the work is woven with an unusual plastic gold grid filament for additional dimension. A vintage spool of wool Rhiannon has held in her possession for the entirety of her weaving career was used for plaiting details. Kenaf, a sustainable banana plant fiber from Malaysia was used for weft design along with agave. The work was cut, stitched together and, is intended to be suspended loosely so hardware does not detract from it’s wabi-sabi appearance.
