Fallen Beneath the Cracks

The story….

I’m often left contemplating the void in which textiles have been considered art, let alone fine artwork. Whenever I travel, I take time to note the furnishings I find there and quite often, textiles on the wall have been omitted. Introducing.. Fallen Beneath the Cracks. The name arose from my observation of our missing works. Contemplating how to tell more of a story of where material harmony is woven together, I scoured the studio for man made materials ie: metal sculpture wire and gathered as many natural, unruly fibers I could.

The process….

Upright frame loom was warped with 16 gauge silver sculpture wire, bent over the nails in the loom for durabile tension & a wavy imprint. Bundles of horsehair were wrapped with silk to create loops before they were introduced as the weft. Jute, banana plant & raffia fibers were woven in between gold toned jewelry wire. Agave fiber was processed through flax hatchel, tied into bundles & suspended a few inches out from the wire. Exposed wire warp elements were left to catch a focused spotlight above.
