The story…
After searching meticulously for 6 years to source agave fiber, the artist wanted to create a contemporary artwork that felt as if it could have been buried and amassed textures of Earth atop it. This fiber is a bi-product of the tequilla-mezcal industry in Oaxaca while also holding a history of having been found in 19th century burden baskets O’odham women would wear on their backs to sell their pottery in Tucson. It holds a cultural significance of connection to the desert, it reflects the storyline of using all the materials possible from plant life that is harvested.
The process….
Woven on an upright frame loom, this work was warped in linene. Pounds of raw hemp were processed to create this unique hemp ply yarn. Raw tufts were brought through the warp for a voluminous feel. Chenille, linen & jute were woven as the weft design. Braided abaca fiber ( banana plant ) was woven in to complete the neutral toned presentation all inspired by the color of decor found in Tulum hotels.
