The story….

Fascinated with archeological and the textiles that have survived centuries, the artist began digging around for textiles found on mummies in Mongolia. Enter, the mummies of the Taklamakan Desert. These mysterious mummies were well preserved to the point of having their burial garments and hair intact which helped archeologist identify their Indo-European features. There is a reddish blond tint found in the mummies hair, and amongst the sand of the Tarim Basin that intrigued the artist so she wove this work invigorated by the ancient world of the East. Hemp has long been a staple fiber to the east so the storytelling bridges history & intrigue into this textural piece.

The process….

Acquiring organic, naturally dyed merino roving from Oaxaca, the artist wove this delicate fiber onto the floor loom. The cotton warp was dressed to create a negative space to provide a more emphasized texture for the viewer. Hemp was created out of pounds of raw fiber and woven onto cotton warp. The artwork was stitched together, mounted on canvas and stretched over wooden bars.
